Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Suffolk public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Lead service line compliance funding
The EPA requires the city to find and eventually replace lead and galvanized steel water lines. Round two testing starts soon in older neighborhoods like downtown, and roughly 11,000 lines of unknown material still need to be narrowed down. The city — not the homeowner — is on the hook financially for replacements, including private-side lines, under current rules, and the program runs through 2037.
Spectrum–Cox merger and broadband affordability questions
Council Member Bennett raised questions about the Spectrum–Cox merger, Verizon's retreat from landline service, and how residents will find the best broadband deal through the Southside Network Authority. Staff said the merger won't affect current projects and offered follow-up information.
Lake Meade Dam repairs — Portsmouth funding uncertain
Rector asked whether Portsmouth is funding repairs to the Lake Meade Dam upstream of the Kimberley Bridge. Utilities staff said there's no new information and the city doesn't actively monitor that dam — Portsmouth should be doing so.
Stormwater and solid waste billing updates
New properties now get billed for stormwater and refuse service right away instead of waiting for the next fiscal year; downtown trash cans must be out by 6 p.m. on collection days.
