Road Closure
Heads up, drivers—the 700 block of Main Street near Kimberly Bridge in downtown Suffolk is completely flooded and shut down this morning. You'll definitely want to map out an alternate route to avoid getting stuck in major morning traffic delays.
Regional transportation funding
Council endorsed three state funding applications worth about $54 million: widening Pruden Boulevard (Route 460), turn lanes at Bridge Road/College Drive, and widening Route 58. The mayor flagged that the Pruden Boulevard project cost has ballooned to about $120 million and that the state formula weights congestion heavily, making it hard for Suffolk to score well.
Bus stops, shelters and transit expansion
Bennett asked for a new bus stop on Nansemond Parkway between Cherry Blossom and Woodlake; Ward pushed for shelters at stops where riders wait in the rain. Staff said the city will add shelters where it owns right-of-way and welcomed input on new stop locations.
Rush-hour construction traffic and railroad coordination
Bennett complained about contractors working during rush hour and about HRSD utility work tying up Portsmouth Boulevard and Byrd's Road. Staff noted contracts and VDOT rules already bar rush-hour and holiday-weekend work, and night work has its own neighborhood tradeoffs.
