Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Suffolk public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Community Corrections Program grant
Suffolk accepted $290,234 in state funds (with about $174,000 more from partner localities and fees) for the Fifth Judicial District Community Corrections Program.
Public Safety Facility
The firefighters union pushed again on staffing and pay, citing a 40-year history of the issue. The mayor said the city manager and fire chief are working on staffing, compensation, and scheduling recommendations for the budget process.
Fire Department Staffing Shortfall
The firefighters union says 8 of 11 engine companies run below the national four-person standard and the council has had a costed staffing plan for 14 months. They're promising to show up at every meeting until it's funded.
Traffic Safety Fund and Camera Program Update
Suffolk's speed and red-light cameras have cut citations sharply — by 50-90% at many locations — which the chief says proves driver behavior is changing. New state law requires camera money go into a dedicated fund for safety projects like sidewalks, crosswalks, and lighting, and an ordinance establishing that fund went to the consent agenda.
ICE facility donation controversy
A resident asked the city to return a Parks and Rec donation from the Hispanic Chamber of Coastal Virginia, whose president is leading the push to bring an ICE facility to Suffolk.
Community mental health services funding
Western Tidewater CSB delivers about $44 million in care to Suffolk residents — a roughly 47-to-1 return on the city's local contribution — including a five-day walk-in clinic, school-based clinicians, and 24/7 crisis services. No new local funding request this year.
Mark One mental health crisis response
Suffolk Fire & Rescue and Western Tidewater teamed up to send a paramedic and a mental health professional to crisis calls, avoiding police custody orders and freeing officers for other work. It ran on 40 hours a week and still handled 382 calls last year.
Opposition to a Federal Detention Center in Suffolk
Council wants large warehouse owners to know the city opposes hosting a federal detention center. Zoning already limits such facilities to heavy industrial M-2 districts with a conditional use permit, and several industrial parks have proffers or covenants barring them.
