Data center prohibition
At Council's direction, the commission recommended an outright ban on data centers in every zoning district while the city studies the issue. Commissioners want a real, forward-looking conversation — including a joint meeting with Council and regional coordination — rather than reacting to applications out of fear.
Cannabis retail land use rules
Virginia's legal recreational marijuana market takes effect July 1, 2027, and the state has preempted cities from banning or capping cannabis businesses. Suffolk can still use normal zoning tools — conditional use permits, site plan rules, buffer distances it may shorten but not lengthen — and staff is now deciding which zones allow cultivation, processing, and retail.
